Reclaiming Freedom: How an E-Bike Helped Me Find Joy After 50 Years

My name is Ron Cairns. I’m 60 years old, a construction supervisor from Bradford, Ontario, and for a long time, I wasn't sure I’d ever feel "young" again. For fifteen years, I lived with severe arthritis in both my knees. It wasn't just the physical pain; it was the way it shrinks your world. When you can’t move, the anxiety and depression start to settle in.

Things got even tougher when I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease that eventually led to kidney failure. Starting dialysis is a heavy reality to face, especially when you're told a transplant could be years away. My doctors told me I needed knee replacements before I could even qualify for a transplant. It was a long, grueling road, but it was the only way forward.

During my rehab, a friend mentioned e-bikes. I’ll be honest, I was skeptical at first, but I decided to take the leap and bought a Freesky Alaska Pro M-520.

That decision changed everything.

The Ride That Changed My Outlook

The Alaska Pro, with its dual batteries and those big, stable fat tires, gave me something I thought I’d lost forever: the ability to go the distance without pain. What started as short little trips around the block quickly turned into real adventures. I found myself covering 180 kilometres in a single day.

I’ll never forget one particular ride. I started in Bradford, headed up to Barrie, and then took the trail all the way to Orillia, circling Lake Simcoe. Feeling the wind and the sheer speed of the bike, I realized I was smiling like a kid. For the first time in fifty years, that carefree version of myself was back. I wasn't a patient or a guy with "bad knees"—I was just a rider.

A New Lease on Life

I’m writing this just three days after receiving my kidney transplant at Toronto General Hospital. As I sit here recovering, I’m reflecting on how much that bike did for my spirit during the hardest years of my life. It gave me my passion back. It gave me a reason to get out into the sun and see what was over the next hill.

I’m so grateful to the team at Freesky for building a machine that is sturdy and reliable enough for a guy like me. I’m already looking forward to the day I can get back on the trails, feel the sun on my face, and start my next chapter.

If you’re struggling with mobility or just feel like your world has gotten a bit too small, don't give up. There is a whole world out there waiting for you, and sometimes, you just need two wheels and a bit of a boost to find it again.
